Week 8 Reading and Writing
Looking Back
I love the readings! I enjoy that they are from all over the world. My minor is in international studies, so I have loved this opportunity to use and build on my past knowledge. I find it hard to choose what stories to write about, because I enjoy them all! I could read stories from different regions all day. I do find it helpful to do some research prior to reading from a region so I can better understand the culture. Looking back on the readings, it has been fun to compare and contrast stories from different regions. A lot of stories have many elements in common. My favorite readings so far have probably been the Bengali stories and Nigerian Folk tales. The Bengali stories were fun to research, and I had little knowledge of that region, and it was nice to learn about that culture. The Nigerian Folk Tales were a lot of fun because they describe an environmental or animal behavior, which is always entertaining.
I have thoroughly enjoyed working on my storybook project. Having studied abroad in Italy twice, I can picture the scenery of the places I am writing about. I know my writing still needs a lot of work, but I am proud for how it is turning out. Hopefully one day I can share them with my family, passing on some of my heritage. I think my Italian grandparents, if they were still around today would be proud.
Looking Forward
I have learned in the past weeks how helpful it is to do some research about the region I am about to read about. I will continue to do this in the upcoming weeks. I have enjoyed the story planning option, for it allows me to research a topic more thoroughly and find more examples from other sources.
The Tiger and the Brahmadaitya Source: NPR.ORG
This has been one of my favorite pictures thus far. It is a beautiful drawing that displays the indian culture. The colors are vibrant and personable. When I look at it, I feel like both the tiger and the woman are looking at me with pure intentions, as though they are intently listening to me. Learning about and studying other cultures is a passion of mine, and this image, as cliche as the saying is, is worth a 1000 words.
